Ginger Simple Syrup

One of the most warming spices, ginger is a staple of the holiday season. The peppery, pungent tingle of ginger with sweet and spicy notes in this simple syrup makes a perfect addition to any cocktail.

Ingredients

SERVINGS: 1 Cup(s)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¾ cup ginger root (peeled and sliced into thin rounds)

Preparation

Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a low boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Add ginger. Simmer gently for 5–10 minutes. Remove from heat.

Cover and let the ginger steep 30 minutes to 1 hour (to your taste preference). Remove the ginger, straining through a sieve. Allow to cool completely. Keep in an airtight container and refrigerate.

You can experiment and adjust the syrup based on your tastes. Adding or reducing sugar can make the syrup richer or less sweet. I like equal parts of each, which seems to balance the sweet and spicy. You can also substitute other sugars, such as brown or raw sugar.
