Black Forest Custard Crunch

A traditional Black Forest cake is made with rich dark sponge cake, heavy whipped cream and lots of cherries. The type of cherry seems to range from dark and tart to maraschino, which are not only a sweet variety but soaked in sugar. This recipe makes easy work of combining similar flavors to create an equally decadent dessert. Because of all the sweetness in the cookies, I prefer a tart cherry for this recipe, but if sweet is what’s available, that is just fine. However, I would steer clear of those maraschinos.
