Simple Apple Fritters with Powdered Sugar
Nothing says fall better than apples and cinnamon, battered and fried to perfection, topped with a generous dusting of powdered sugar!
Servings 10 fritters
Ingredients
- 1¼ cups flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1½ teaspoons cinnamon (or more, if preferred)
- Dash ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
- 1 –2 apples, peeled, cored, diced and set aside (should yield 1–1½ cups of diced apple).
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Whisk all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In a smaller bowl, add egg, milk and vanilla. Mix together. Gently pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk to form a batter that is slightly runny but still intact.
- Add the diced apple. Using a spatula, fold the apples in with the batter.
- Heat the oil to 375°F over medium-high heat. Carefully drop ¼ cup of batter in slowly. Fry until golden brown, approximately 2–3 minutes per side. Using a stainless-steel slotted spoon or tongs, flip the fritter over to fry the other side.
- Remove and let drain on a paper-towel-covered plate or on a baking rack.
- Once drained and cooled slightly, dust fritters with powdered sugar. Plate and serve. Option: Drizzle a glaze over the top (try a simple glaze or jazz it up with New York maple syrup).
Notes
Honeycrisp work well for a sweeter apple, although a number of other varieties also work.
