Old-Fashioned Apple Butter

Preserve the abundance of apple season with jars of sweet apple butter. As the weather cools, reach for a jar to brighten up breakfast or brunch.
Servings 14 cups

Ingredients

  • 16 cups unsweetened applesauce or apple pulp
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 8 cups sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a large pot and cook over medium heat until the sauce thickens. To check for proper thickness, test it by scooping a small spoonful onto a cold plate. If it is ready, the dab of apple butter will hold its shape well and no liquid will appear around its edges. As the mixture thickens you might want to reduce the heat to avoid spattering.
  • Stir frequently.
